One of the best things you can do to make your tax return preparation less painful is to organize your tax documents before you hand them to your accountant. We look for things to be in a certain order, but we don’t really communicate this with our clients. I’m here to tell you how to make the process go more smoothly as the tax season gets nothing but busier. We like for the documents to follow the tax form, so here is a rough outline:

Basic taxpayer information: name, address, social security number, date of birth any dependents with all the basics.

Income: can come from many sources – W-2s, 1099-MISC, 1099-R, sole proprietor business, etc.

Interest and Dividends: most come via 1099-Int, 1009-Div or 1099-b in the case of capital gains

Any other investment income you may have

Deductions: most people take the standard deduction now, but if you don’t, we will want to see the support for any itemized amounts.

This follows the general framework for a return. If you have the ability to make copies for your accountant, that is what we love! We know though that not everyone can do this. The way our process works is we request everyone to upload their documents to us. That way we don’t waste your valuable time making copies of what you brought in if you aren’t comfortable leaving the documents with us. We do a quick taxpayer interview and answer some due diligence items if necessary. We take your documents and input them into our software. We look as we go to see if there is anything that we may be able to advise you on for the next tax year. After everything is entered, we like to give you a comparison versus the prior year to help you understand why there are differences. (There are many reasons for differences – standard deduction amount has changed, tax rates have changed, your income is higher or lower than the prior year, you have a child you can no longer claim as a dependent, etc.) After the review work is done, we sit down with you, our valued client (see our page for more info) https://www.accountantcolumbiatnsuccentrix.com/about/and go over the results. If you have any questions, we answer them and then get signatures to e-file your return. All along the way, we are protecting your data.

We appreciate any help you can give us along the way, and when you organize your tax documents, that is just one of the ways. We strive to provide excellent customer service to all of our clients.
